Bio
Choi+Shine Architects è uno studio di design noto a livello internazionale, fondato da Jin Choi e Thomas Shine. I loro lavori sono stati esposti in musei e gallerie di tutto il mondo con il loro progetto più noto, The Land of Giants, un gruppo di tralicci di trasmissione antropomorfi, la cui realizzazione è prevista per il 2017 in Islanda.
Jin Choi ha ottenuto un MFA in Architectural Art e un Master in Architecture presso l’Università di Yale. I suoi lavori sono stati pubblicati ed esposti in musei di tutto il mondo. Nel 2013 è stata selezionata dall’Istituto coreano degli architetti come Global Young Architect.
Thomas Shine ha ottenuto un Bachelor e un Master in Architecture presso l’Università di Yale, dove ha insegnato Strutture architettoniche. Prima di intraprendere lo studio dell’architettura, ha lavorato nel settore delle biotecnologie a Londra, e successivamente ha diretto un’azienda produttrice di attrezzature mediche.
Project
The Land of Giants trasforma i tralicci elettrici in statue inserite nel paesaggio. Con minime modifiche rispetto al disegno consolidato del traliccio in acciaio, i “Giants” creano nel paesaggio una serie di monumenti potenti, solenni e mai uguali. Come per le statue dell’Isola di Pasqua, si prevede che queste moderne cariatidi alte 30 metri si imporranno senza farsi notare, entrando a far parte dell’ambiente circostante ma al tempo stesso fornendo un servizio alla collettività: il trasporto silenzioso dell’energia elettrica in ogni direzione, giorno e notte, con qualsiasi condizione atmosferica.
Bio
Choi+Shine Architects is an internationally-renowned design studio established by Jin Choi and Thomas Shine. Their works have appeared in museums and galleries worldwide with their best-known project, “The Land of Giants”, human shaped transmission towers, scheduled for construction in Iceland in 2017.
Jin Choi holds a MFA in Architectural Art, and an M. Arch from Yale University. Her work has been published and exhibited in museums worldwide. In 2013 she was selected by The Korean Institute of Architects as a “Global Young Architect.”
Thomas Shine received his B. Arch and M. Arch from Yale University and taught Architectural Structures at Yale. Before studying Architecture, he worked in Biotechnology in London, and later ran a firm developing medical equipment.
Project
Submitted for an international competition in Iceland, The Land of Giants transforms mundane electrical pylons into statues on the landscape. Making only minor alterations to well established steel-framed tower design, the Giants creates a series of monuments on the landscape that are powerful, solemn and variable. Like the statues of Easter Island, it is envisioned that these 30-meters modern caryatids will take on a quiet authority, belonging to their landscape yet serving the people, silently transporting electricity across all terrain, day and night, rain or shine.
